As at the end of 2017, Uganda had 21 power generation plants connected to the national grid. These plants have a total installation capacity of  927.4 MW and they include; three (3) large hydro power plants, Nine (9) small hydro power plants, two (2) thermal (Heavy Fuel Oil – HFO) power plants, five (5) bagasse-based cogeneration power plants and two (2) solar PV power plants.

A total of 3,855.5 GWh were generated in 2017 as compared to 3,489.1 GWh that were generated in 2016 signifying an 11% increase. The increase in energy generated was partly due to the new power plants commissioned during the reporting period and additional generation from the large hydro power plants through optimization.
