Energy Minister Calls for More Efficiency in the Energy Sector to Realize Lower Tariffs and Increased Access to Electricity

The Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, Hon. Eng. Irene Muloni, has called for more efficiency in the Electricity Supply Industry in order to increase access to electricity and realize lower tariffs.

The Minister was speaking at a dinner organized to bid farewell to the former Chief Executive Officer of the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA), Dr. Benon Mutambi, at the Golf Course Hotel Kampala.

Hon. Muloni noted that the President’s Vision of increasing access to electricity and lowering the tariff to 5 US cents could only be realized if all technocrats in the Electricity Supply Industry committed to quality service delivery.

She added that the hard work and commitment exhibited by the ERA Board, Management and staff had set a pace which all sector players needed to follow in order to make Uganda a middle income country by 2020.

The Minister commended Dr. Mutambi for the good leadership at ERA, which had steered Uganda’s Electricity Supply Industry from inefficiency to sustainable electricity supply.

The Chairman of the ERA Board, Mr. Richard Santo Apire commended Dr. Mutambi for various achievements that had earned the Authority both local and international awards and recognition. Mr. Apire expressed optimism that given Dr. Mutambi’s track record, he would be successful in his new role as Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

In his remarks, Dr. Mutambi expressed gratitude to the Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, the Ministers of State for Energy and Minerals, the Development Partners, the Board and Staff of ERA for their steadfast support that had immensely contributed to Dr. Mutambi’s success as enumerated through various achievements in the Electricity Supply Industry. He particularly urged the Development Partners to continue supporting the Global Energy Transfer for Feed-in-Tariff (GETFiT) program.

Dr. Mutambi noted that with its existing staff compliment, the Electricity Regulatory Authority had the right resources to steer Uganda’s Electricity Supply Industry forward. The Dinner was attended by officials from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, Development Partners, Licensees, the ERA Board, Management, and staff.
